Can you live without electricity for six to twelve months?
I just read “One Second After“>One Second After” by William Forschten. It is a fictional BUT accurate account of what would happen after an EMP strike. EMP stands for Electro Magnetic Pulse. It’s like a lighting bolt or power surge shorting out virtually everything that has an electronic circuit in it. This could happen naturally. It’s like when the sun causes the Northern Lights and effects TV and radio communications. If the sun sent enough energy our way it could do greater damage. But what I’m talking about would come from a nuclear explosion high above the USA. So high you might not even notice it and it would not cause ill effects to us on the ground directly. Everything electronic would be ruined and that means all of your electronic, the power companies ability to make power, the gas and water companies ability to pipe you what you need and most of the replacement parts for the really big machines are made over seas.
Well, do you think this is all just crazy talk? Guess who just test fired a missile on Columbus Day and has nuclear capabilities. NORTH KOREAN that’s who. Oh, and who else has been in the news recently firing missiles and working on a nuclear program. Yes, that would be IRAN. Have I mentioned that we are thinking of slowing down our missile defense spending? The most likely sinario is that an ocean going freighter would cruise into the Gulf of Mexico and let fly with one, two or three of these and ONE SECOND later we’re back to the 1800’s.
If you live in an area prone to natural disasters, you may have a few days worth of food and water put away. How about no refrigeration, no distribution, no cars, TV, radio, phones, heat, light… the list goes on. You can’t put this book down once you start reading it and you won’t be sleeping much after you’re done. So think about stocking up on food, water and ammo.
Pretty depressing. Likely I finished another book that got me back to the middle of the road and I’ll be sharing that with you soon.
